TELEWORK - Flexible way of working in the changing business environment

Traditionally, the proper place to work is at the workplace. However, this circle has now been broken by the modern communication and information technology. Work is being performed in an "office at home", in a telecottage, a satellite office or some other telework centre. This sort of telework or flexiwork brings a new pattern of thought into the business activities, regional policy and employment efforts. Location and travel will become unessential, and instead of counting and controlling the office hours the focus will be on the results of work.

Different aspects of telework - despite working time and place

Telework can be done at home, in a telecottage or in a satellite office by using new communication technology. Telework can also mean

decentralized working arrangements ingreasing co-operation between companies better exploitation of data technology better managing of communication technology telework methods in personnel training advanced information gathering systems etc.

Visible results in telework

Both from the employer´s and the employee´s viewpoint telework demands for arrangements and contracts. In the USA, Canada, Japan and the EU countries telework is considered as an essential factor in creating growth, competitiveness and employment. Of the eight main topics in the EU White Paper telework is considered as one of the most important. The research and experimentation carried out on the topic shows that telework

increases:

productivity of work job motivation of the worker, possibilities of choice and independence flexibility to recruit skilled labour use and costs of data communications regional equilibrium

reduces:

travel to and from work and its costs pollution of the environment need for new office space congestion time and location planning regional inequality

improves:

the encounter of work and worker the level of know-how synergy quality of work and life economic structure and its susceptibility to change

Telework can be used in several different fields. For example in computer technology (designing, programming, data processing, www-pages etc.) bookkeeping, invoicing, designinig in different fields, CAD/CAM programing, advertising, selling and buying and marketing are fields, where we can adapt telework.

Concrete benefits for companies

Now when competition is ingreasing companies need more flexible functioning techniques. One possibility is telework. Positive factors of competition are increasing flexibility of working time, saving in costs, increasing efficiency in work and better service ability, so if necessary hiring people to clear the work piling up is easy, to reduce routines temporarily etc., in which case they can concentrate more efficiency to key points.
